Diverse Corn Belt Project What would have to happen to introduce a new crop into the agriculture system to help diversify the Midwest corn belt states?

We asked a lot from Julia and she delivered! Julia did a wonderful job capturing the progress of our project and the nuances of a very complex system that incorporated social, biological and agronomic elements. In addition to the compelling images Julia created, the real-time graphic recording was engaging and the images brough a wonderful element to our meeting that all appreciated. The images have been put to good use and are included in a variety of our presentations and outreach materials.” – Emily Usher, Diverse Corn Belt Project, Project Manager, Purdue University

What would have to happen to introduce a major crop like oats into the agriculture system to help diversify the Midwest corn belt states of Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa?

That’s what a group of researchers with a USDA grant were asking at their 2nd Annual Meeting.

They wanted a scribe to capture a systems mapping activity, part of a facilitated process that would walks participants through what a system shift would look like. For example, if oats were integrated into the mostly soy/corn rotation – what processors, policy, markets, livestock implications, etc. would we need to have in place to make it work?
